Chores by age

Chores for 11 year olds

Eleven year olds are one step from the teen years, and chores at this age are about independence. The aim is a kid who can run their own day and take a real load off the household.

What 11 year olds can realistically handle

An 11 year old can manage a weekly schedule of chores on their own, notice when things need doing, and handle most household tasks with mild products and basic kitchen tools. They can cook simple meals on the stove with you in the house, and handle a sharp knife for basic chopping after being taught.

Push back is common. Tweens want a say, so let them help write the list. Chores they chose are chores they are more likely to do, and the negotiating is practice for later.

Making chores stick at this age

  • Let them help write the chore list. Tweens do the chores they chose.
  • Teach knife skills properly, with a real knife and a claw grip, before they need them.
  • Swap reminders for a set time: chores done before screens, every day. "First chores, then screens" is one of the oldest findings in behavior research: a less liked task gets done when a liked one follows it.
  • If they want to watch younger siblings, start with a babysitting course. The American Red Cross runs them for ages 11 and up.

About the point values

Points here work out to roughly one point for every 10 minutes of work, never less than one. Change them to suit your family. What matters is that a harder job is worth more than an easy one. The chart of chores by age uses the same scale for every age, so siblings' lists compare fairly. Wondering whether to pay in points or cash? See points vs allowance and how much allowance by age.

Questions parents ask about chores for 11 year olds

Is an 11 year old old enough to cook?

With you in the house and a few lessons, yes. Start with pasta, eggs, grilled cheese and tacos. Teach them to turn pan handles in, keep a lid nearby for a pan fire and never leave the stove on.

My 11 year old argues about every chore. Is that normal?

Very. It is part of wanting more control. Giving them choices within the list, and a clear trade like points toward something they want, usually cuts the arguing more than insisting does. Research on motivation keeps finding that a real say in the work keeps people doing it.
