Chores for 7 year olds

Seven year olds are capable and still eager, which makes this one of the best ages to hand over real jobs. What they lack is consistency, so the structure you set now carries a lot of weight.

What 7 year olds can realistically handle

A 7 year old can read a simple checklist, remember a routine of five or six steps and work for 15 to 20 minutes on a chore. They can use a full size vacuum, load plates into a dishwasher and follow a basic recipe step with you.

They are also very aware of fairness. If a sibling has an easier job, you will hear about it. Point values help here: a harder chore that earns more points feels fair in a way that "because I said so" never does.

Making chores stick at this age

  • Use points to make hard jobs worth more. It settles most "that's not fair" arguments.
  • Check the work together at the end, once. Fixing it behind their back teaches them it does not matter.
  • Let them pick one new chore a month from the stretch list.

About the point values

Points here work out to roughly one point for every 10 minutes of work, never less than one. Change them to suit your family. What matters is that a harder job is worth more than an easy one. The chart of chores by age uses the same scale for every age, so siblings' lists compare fairly. Wondering whether to pay in points or cash? See points vs allowance and how much allowance by age.

Questions parents ask about chores for 7 year olds

How much should a 7 year old help around the house?

There is no research-based number of minutes. The daily list here adds up to about 50, most of it getting ready and tidying that need doing anyway. Consistency matters more than volume: a short list done every day beats a long one done some days.

Can a 7 year old use a vacuum?

Yes. A lightweight stick vacuum is easiest. Show them how to empty it and how to check for small toys and cords first. Their bedroom is a good first room because the stakes are low.
